St. Luke’s Vision for the Future Retreat Schedule and Invitation
Beloveds,
Plan to attend all or part of the Future Church Summit, 9-11pm Friday, February 19 and 11am-5:15pm Saturday, February 20, Zoom ID 858 2666 7555. No pre-registration is required. I know that schedule won’t work for all of you—do what you can and we’ll let you know when recorded sessions are available for viewing.
When Fr. Sean died, he had been working with you on claiming your heritage and seizing your vision for the future through a series of Holy Conversations. Building on that foundation, after a full year of living in the pandemic, we continue that holy effort. Between now and Easter, your Vestry will adopt a new vision for how St. Luke’s lives out the mission of the Church (BCP 855). The written and spoken and prayed articulation of this vision will be the yardstick against which all parish decisions will be measured. It will also guide creative communications for as long as that statement of God’s vision for St. Luke’s Powhatan. To formulate that vision, we are taking the following actions steps:
(1) Right now all Vestry members and parish officers are capturing their understanding of God’s vision for St. Luke’s in 12 words or less. You are invited to do the same – send them to register@stlukespowhatan.org. Before you pray and write, please review the mission of the Church: to restore all people to unity with God and each other, a mission pursued by praying and worshiping, proclaiming the Gospel, and promoting justice, peace, and love (BCP 855).”
(2) The Vestry is gathering for Centering Prayer every Wednesday evening, and for vision-focused conversation every Sunday morning.
(3) We are having a parish-wide retreat with Fresh Expressions – the Future Church Summit.
I hope you will participate! The full schedule is attached.
Love and blessings,
Sarah+

Shrove Tuesday Virtual Pancake Dinner
Zoom ID 85826667555 | By phone, dial 1-301-715-8592
Meeting ID: 858 2666 7555
Celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday, Shrove Tuesday (also called “Pancake Tuesday” or “Pancake Day”) is the final day before the 40-day period of Lent begins.
Its name comes from the Germanic-Old English word “shrive,” meaning absolve, and it is the last day of the liturgical season historically known as Shrovetide. Because it comes directly before Lent, a season of fasting and penitence, this was the day that Christians would go to be “shriven” by their confessor.
Shrove Tuesday also became a day for pre-fasting indulgence. In particular, the need to use up rich ingredients such as butter, milk, sugar and eggs before Lent gave rise to the tradition of eating pancakes on this day.
There are even historical references to a “pancake bell” in English towns being rung around 11 a.m. on this day to signal that it was time to get frying.
